Community Engagement
“Every bit that you get down on video is important for researchers in the future. And every story is important for every organization and every human being.” - U.S. Air Force Colonel Marcy Atwood (Retired)

In the world of military aviation, tales of heroism, bravery, and service often dominate the narrative. However, nestled within are vibrant stories of women aviators who have played crucial roles in shaping the course of history through their service in the armed forces. These stories, spanning generations, have found a platform for preservation and dissemination through the Women Military Aviators' (WMA) Oral History Project.

The WMA Historical Community and Oral History Project, led by retired Air Force officers Margie Varuska, Marcy Atwood, and Peggy Carnahan, is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting the legacy of women in military aviation. With over four decades of history, WMA has been instrumental in advocating for the recognition and rights of women aviators across all military branches. Recognizing the importance of documenting the experiences of women aviators, Varuska and Atwood embarked on a mission to capture these narratives before they faded into obscurity. However, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a shift towards remote interviews, leveraging technology to bridge geographical barriers and reach a broader audience.

A significant milestone for the WMA project was partnering with TheirStory to help facilitate the recording, transcribing, and archiving of remote oral history interviews. Through this collaboration, WMA has streamlined the interview process, enabling members to share their stories with ease and accessibility. The platform's user-friendly interface has empowered interviewees to narrate their experiences authentically, ensuring that each voice is heard and preserved for posterity. Archived on TheirStory’s partner platform Aviary, visitors can learn about the history of women in aviation for generations to come.

Beyond individual testimonies, the oral history project has become a catalyst for community-building and solidarity among women aviators. Group interviews, roundtable discussions, and thematic sessions have facilitated dialogue, camaraderie, and mutual support, fostering a sense of belonging within the WMA community. By amplifying diverse voices and experiences, the project has enriched the collective tapestry of women's contributions to military aviation. With each interview conducted and story shared, they honor the sacrifices and achievements of those who paved the way for future generations. As the oral history project continues to evolve, its impact goes beyond WMA, serving as a beacon of inspiration for women in aviation worldwide.
